Narrative:
Cleared to taxi to runway with no holding instructions at ord. Captain (myself) was taxiing while first officer was reading checklist. Light rain was falling and it was necessary to clear windshield every 2-3 mins. I looked to my left for about 10 seconds to note the flow of traffic to runway when first officer yelled that an aircraft (737) was taxiing into/at us from the right adjoining taxiway. We stepped on the brakes and swerved left to avoid him. For a moment it looked as if we would hit but he braked to a stop. We were as far on the left of the taxiway as we could go without going off. His wingtip was probably 20-50 ft from ours. We made sure he was stopped and continued on. Ground had never told us to stop or give away to anyone. Related factors were first officer reading checklist, rain on windscreen and my looking away for too long. Also, we never extinguished our taxi light or came to stop prior to the incident. We were taxiing at an average speed. In the future I'll look around more and run the wipers more.

Title: NEAR MISS DURING TAXI OUT TO RWY. SEE AND AVOID CONCEPT.
Narrative: CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY WITH NO HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS AT ORD. CAPT (MYSELF) WAS TAXIING WHILE FO WAS READING CHKLIST. LIGHT RAIN WAS FALLING AND IT WAS NECESSARY TO CLR WINDSHIELD EVERY 2-3 MINS. I LOOKED TO MY L FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS TO NOTE THE FLOW OF TFC TO RWY WHEN FO YELLED THAT AN ACFT (737) WAS TAXIING INTO/AT US FROM THE R ADJOINING TXWY. WE STEPPED ON THE BRAKES AND SWERVED L TO AVOID HIM. FOR A MOMENT IT LOOKED AS IF WE WOULD HIT BUT HE BRAKED TO A STOP. WE WERE AS FAR ON THE L OF THE TXWY AS WE COULD GO WITHOUT GOING OFF. HIS WINGTIP WAS PROBABLY 20-50 FT FROM OURS. WE MADE SURE HE WAS STOPPED AND CONTINUED ON. GND HAD NEVER TOLD US TO STOP OR GIVE AWAY TO ANYONE. RELATED FACTORS WERE FO READING CHKLIST, RAIN ON WINDSCREEN AND MY LOOKING AWAY FOR TOO LONG. ALSO, WE NEVER EXTINGUISHED OUR TAXI LIGHT OR CAME TO STOP PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. WE WERE TAXIING AT AN AVERAGE SPD. IN THE FUTURE I'LL LOOK AROUND MORE AND RUN THE WIPERS MORE.
