Narrative:
I was on the ground at the FBO at ipt. I called the tower and asked for a south departure. The tower cleared me to runway 27. I taxied on taxiway a towards runway 27. I stopped where I thought was an appropriate place to do a runup. At that point, the tower called me and said I had passed the hold short line for runway 27. I asked if I should do a 180 but the tower said no. After further clearance, I departed without incident. If the tower had wished me to hold short, I believe the controller should have made that explicit in his clearance. Also, I may have chosen the hold short line to do my runup anyway, but the hold short line marking was so faded it was virtually impossible to see. I believe airport markings should be checked and repainted more frequently to avoid problems.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNAUTH RWY ENTRY AS SMA PASSES OVER THE FADED RWY MARKING HOLD LINE PLACEMENT.
Narrative: I WAS ON THE GND AT THE FBO AT IPT. I CALLED THE TWR AND ASKED FOR A S DEP. THE TWR CLRED ME TO RWY 27. I TAXIED ON TXWY A TOWARDS RWY 27. I STOPPED WHERE I THOUGHT WAS AN APPROPRIATE PLACE TO DO A RUNUP. AT THAT POINT, THE TWR CALLED ME AND SAID I HAD PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 27. I ASKED IF I SHOULD DO A 180 BUT THE TWR SAID NO. AFTER FURTHER CLRNC, I DEPARTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. IF THE TWR HAD WISHED ME TO HOLD SHORT, I BELIEVE THE CTLR SHOULD HAVE MADE THAT EXPLICIT IN HIS CLRNC. ALSO, I MAY HAVE CHOSEN THE HOLD SHORT LINE TO DO MY RUNUP ANYWAY, BUT THE HOLD SHORT LINE MARKING WAS SO FADED IT WAS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE. I BELIEVE ARPT MARKINGS SHOULD BE CHKED AND REPAINTED MORE FREQUENTLY TO AVOID PROBS.
