Narrative:
We were flying the victor airway from dillingham east to king salmon northeast to homer. The captain, shortly after departing dillingham, suggested a 20 degree turn to the left to 'cut the corner' around king salmon. Distraction by chatter on the company frequency, I failed to realize that the captain did not request this deviation with ATC. As we passed north of king salmon, zan queried us as to why we were passing so far to the north of king salmon instead of overflying it. The captain responded that we indeed were cutting the corner and had errantly 'made our turn too soon.' I feel that I, as the PF, should have paid more attention to the captain when he suggested the turn. Had I not allowed myself to become engrossed in the conversation on the company frequency, I would have had the presence of mind to challenge the captain on his decision made independently of ATC authority/authorized.
