Narrative:

During taxi-in to gate at dtw, I cleared the safety zone before following the signal person's instructions. The signal person was standing on the proper parking spot and gave all the proper signals for parking at the gate. At approximately 15-20 ft from the gate the left wingtip and leading edge slat struck a baggage tug. I don't know from where or when the tug came into the wingtip's taxi path, however, it was not observed when I cleared the area prior to following the signal person's instructions. The wing walker stated that he gave the signal person a stop signal 5 times, however, she continued to direct the aircraft toward the gate. No stop signal was given until after striking the bag tug.
