Narrative:
After takeoff from fay, company advised us to call them on unicom. Captain called them and was told that left 'static wick' had scraped against jetway on taxi out of gate. Captain notified dispatcher and company maintenance at destination airport (clt) and had maintenance handle the inspection and repair. (The static discharge plastic wick was the only damage.) aircraft was released for further service. Company ground guide at fay marshalled the captain with taxi-out hand signals, and all were followed. Clearance was obviously not adequate due to jetway improperly positioned, or ground guide failing to give turn signals allowing adequate wing clearance. The captain depends on ground guide's instructions. Possibly, at gates requiring minimal clearance, multiple ground guides would be recommended and exit lines painted by airport to show path to follow when tight turns are necessary. The captain was diligent, but the jetway must have been improperly positioned by only inches.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ON TAXI OUT OF GATE THE WINGTIP STATIC WICK SCRAPED AGAINST THE JETWAY.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF FROM FAY, COMPANY ADVISED US TO CALL THEM ON UNICOM. CAPT CALLED THEM AND WAS TOLD THAT L 'STATIC WICK' HAD SCRAPED AGAINST JETWAY ON TAXI OUT OF GATE. CAPT NOTIFIED DISPATCHER AND COMPANY MAINT AT DEST ARPT (CLT) AND HAD MAINT HANDLE THE INSPECTION AND REPAIR. (THE STATIC DISCHARGE PLASTIC WICK WAS THE ONLY DAMAGE.) ACFT WAS RELEASED FOR FURTHER SVC. COMPANY GND GUIDE AT FAY MARSHALLED THE CAPT WITH TAXI-OUT HAND SIGNALS, AND ALL WERE FOLLOWED. CLRNC WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT ADEQUATE DUE TO JETWAY IMPROPERLY POSITIONED, OR GND GUIDE FAILING TO GIVE TURN SIGNALS ALLOWING ADEQUATE WING CLRNC. THE CAPT DEPENDS ON GND GUIDE'S INSTRUCTIONS. POSSIBLY, AT GATES REQUIRING MINIMAL CLRNC, MULTIPLE GND GUIDES WOULD BE RECOMMENDED AND EXIT LINES PAINTED BY ARPT TO SHOW PATH TO FOLLOW WHEN TIGHT TURNS ARE NECESSARY. THE CAPT WAS DILIGENT, BUT THE JETWAY MUST HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY POSITIONED BY ONLY INCHES.
