Narrative:
At reno, we have 3 instrument landing system (ILS) approachs, ILS runway 16R -- ILS/DME/runway 16R -- ILS/DME/3/runway 16R. Our primary ILS approach is the 'ILS runway 16R.' unless a pilot requests something else, 'this is the approach that a pilot is cleared for (ILS runway 16R). However, it seems that some pilots are flying the 'ILS/DME/runway 16R' approach after being cleared for the 'ILS runway 16R.' this can be catastrophic since, not only are the minimums different but the published missed is also different. If a pilot executes the published missed on the ILS DME runway 16R he/she is to climb to 12000 ft via south course rno ILS to D17.0 then left turn to wagge and hold. ATC thinks he/she is to execute the published missed on the 'ILS runway 16R': climb straight ahead to 6500 ft then climbing left turn to 11000 ft direct fmg VORTAC. In short, what the pilot is going to do on the missed approach and what ATC thinks the pilot is going to do, are 2 different missed approachs. This happened twice today dec/xx/94. Air carrier X and air carrier Y.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLTDEV.
Narrative: AT RENO, WE HAVE 3 INST LNDG SYS (ILS) APCHS, ILS RWY 16R -- ILS/DME/RWY 16R -- ILS/DME/3/RWY 16R. OUR PRIMARY ILS APCH IS THE 'ILS RWY 16R.' UNLESS A PLT REQUESTS SOMETHING ELSE, 'THIS IS THE APCH THAT A PLT IS CLRED FOR (ILS RWY 16R). HOWEVER, IT SEEMS THAT SOME PLTS ARE FLYING THE 'ILS/DME/RWY 16R' APCH AFTER BEING CLRED FOR THE 'ILS RWY 16R.' THIS CAN BE CATASTROPHIC SINCE, NOT ONLY ARE THE MINIMUMS DIFFERENT BUT THE PUBLISHED MISSED IS ALSO DIFFERENT. IF A PLT EXECUTES THE PUBLISHED MISSED ON THE ILS DME RWY 16R HE/SHE IS TO CLB TO 12000 FT VIA S COURSE RNO ILS TO D17.0 THEN L TURN TO WAGGE AND HOLD. ATC THINKS HE/SHE IS TO EXECUTE THE PUBLISHED MISSED ON THE 'ILS RWY 16R': CLB STRAIGHT AHEAD TO 6500 FT THEN CLBING L TURN TO 11000 FT DIRECT FMG VORTAC. IN SHORT, WHAT THE PLT IS GOING TO DO ON THE MISSED APCH AND WHAT ATC THINKS THE PLT IS GOING TO DO, ARE 2 DIFFERENT MISSED APCHS. THIS HAPPENED TWICE TODAY DEC/XX/94. ACR X AND ACR Y.
