Narrative:
Placed GPS III pilot on panel near (next to) wet compass and discovered it was causing substantial deviation affecting navigation. Removed from panel and compass returned to normal accurate reading. GPS III pilot placed on panel so as not to lose reception but wound up causing navigation error. Maybe should let users know of potential problem.

Title: A C172 PLT, WHILE MANEUVERING NEAR MCO, DISCOVERED HIS HANDHELD GPS CAUSED WET COMPASS DEV WHEN PLACED NEAR IT.
Narrative: PLACED GPS III PLT ON PANEL NEAR (NEXT TO) WET COMPASS AND DISCOVERED IT WAS CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DEV AFFECTING NAV. REMOVED FROM PANEL AND COMPASS RETURNED TO NORMAL ACCURATE READING. GPS III PLT PLACED ON PANEL SO AS NOT TO LOSE RECEPTION BUT WOUND UP CAUSING NAV ERROR. MAYBE SHOULD LET USERS KNOW OF POTENTIAL PROB.
