Narrative:
Initial climb clearance to 5000 ft MSL on assigned vector of 065 degrees. Center advised that I had traffic 12 O'clock at 6000 ft MSL. Autoplt/flight director engaged while I looked for the opposing aircraft. While looking for other aircraft, center advised that I had passed 5000 ft MSL (I had gone to 5500 ft MSL), and immediately returned to 5000 ft MSL. Other aircraft was never sighted. All collision lights were on and working on my aircraft. Found that the flight director altitude did not capture the 5000 ft MSL, as it should have. My aircraft has no TCASII equipment on board. Tops at 3500 ft MSL -- clear above.

Narrative: INITIAL CLB CLRNC TO 5000 FT MSL ON ASSIGNED VECTOR OF 065 DEGS. CTR ADVISED THAT I HAD TFC 12 O'CLOCK AT 6000 FT MSL. AUTOPLT/FLT DIRECTOR ENGAGED WHILE I LOOKED FOR THE OPPOSING ACFT. WHILE LOOKING FOR OTHER ACFT, CTR ADVISED THAT I HAD PASSED 5000 FT MSL (I HAD GONE TO 5500 FT MSL), AND IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO 5000 FT MSL. OTHER ACFT WAS NEVER SIGHTED. ALL COLLISION LIGHTS WERE ON AND WORKING ON MY ACFT. FOUND THAT THE FLT DIRECTOR ALT DID NOT CAPTURE THE 5000 FT MSL, AS IT SHOULD HAVE. MY ACFT HAS NO TCASII EQUIP ON BOARD.
