Narrative:

We were on a flight from lax to sea. The WX was clear and we were landing on runway 34. Talking to approach control about 25-30 mi from sea-tac at 7000 ft, we had been told to expect a visual and to report the airport 'in sight.' after a min or so we spotted the airport and called it in sight. However, forgetting we had not yet received clearance for the visual, I rolled the altitude alert away from 7000 ft and told the copilot to start the visual. After descending about 300 ft the controller cleared us for the visual. We started out of 7000 ft prior to receiving clearance to vacate that altitude or clearance for the visual.
