Narrative:
While in cruise flight with ZAU with a filed route of flight from mke to dll V510 bitler nickl 2 arrival to msp, I asked for a heading to proceed direct to bitler (300 degrees). This was approved by ZAU. After crossing dells VOR, I was instructed to contact ZMP on 128.6. The controller was busy at the time of my transition so I waited to contact them. Shortly thereafter, ZMP called my flight number to which I responded. They then asked my heading and altitude which I gave as 300 degrees and 14000 ft. I was then instructed to turn left heading 280 degrees to remain clear of military airspace. I believe this problem could have been prevented had chicago first asked ZMP if my heading would be acceptable considering the status of the military airspace.

SHORTLY THEREAFTER, ZMP CALLED MY FLT NUMBER TO WHICH I RESPONDED. THEY THEN ASKED MY HDG AND ALT WHICH I GAVE AS 300 DEGS AND 14000 FT. I WAS THEN INSTRUCTED TO TURN L HDG 280 DEGS TO REMAIN CLR OF MIL AIRSPACE. I BELIEVE THIS PROB COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED HAD CHICAGO FIRST ASKED ZMP IF MY HDG WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE CONSIDERING THE STATUS OF THE MIL AIRSPACE.
