Narrative:
While en route, unexpected rain, fog and wind was encountered. As a result, I had a very difficult time staying on the airway with the VOR needle moving actively with the wind. Maintaining altitude was also a challenge. After becoming disoriented for a brief period, I contacted ZTL for vectors. They originally vectored me to shoot an approach into rmg which was a missed approach. Afterward, they vectored me to the airport of my choice (fty) and we landed in much more pleasant conditions. After this experience, I will be more conservative in the future when considering the WX.
