Narrative:

Original departure clearance was runway heading to 8000 ft. At approximately 1000 ft AGL departure control amended clearance to 'left turn direct yng VOR, maintain 8000 ft.' at 1500 ft student initiated a r-hand turn to VOR. ATC queried the turn, then amended the clearance to right turn direct. Apparently separation was not an issue. Reflecting on the event brings up 3 contributing factors which led to this occurrence: 1) the naturally high workload on departure, 2) flight instructor's low time and experience in make and model, and 3) student's inexperience in make and model.
