Narrative:
We flew the aircraft from cincinnati to kalamazoo and were met by an FAA inspector who was to ride with us back to cincinnati. He discovered that we did not have an airworthiness certificate on board. The flight back to cincinnati was subsequently canceled and we thought that after discussing the problem with our maintenance and dispatch that we could ferry the aircraft home. We thought that a ferry permit was not necessary. On arriving back at cincinnati we were told that a ferry permit was required. Obviously we were under the impression that we didn't require any documentation and there had been a communication mix- up. The fact that the certificate was missing in the first place caught us by surprise. The 2 other certificates necessary (certificate of registration and radio license) were in place.

Title: FLC OF AN MDT WERE RAMP CHKED AFTER LNDG AND NO ACFT AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE WAS FOUND ABOARD. IN ADDITION, THE FLC RETURNED THE ACFT WITHOUT PAX TO HOME BASE WITHOUT A FERRY PERMIT.
Narrative: WE FLEW THE ACFT FROM CINCINNATI TO KALAMAZOO AND WERE MET BY AN FAA INSPECTOR WHO WAS TO RIDE WITH US BACK TO CINCINNATI. HE DISCOVERED THAT WE DID NOT HAVE AN AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE ON BOARD. THE FLT BACK TO CINCINNATI WAS SUBSEQUENTLY CANCELED AND WE THOUGHT THAT AFTER DISCUSSING THE PROB WITH OUR MAINT AND DISPATCH THAT WE COULD FERRY THE ACFT HOME. WE THOUGHT THAT A FERRY PERMIT WAS NOT NECESSARY. ON ARRIVING BACK AT CINCINNATI WE WERE TOLD THAT A FERRY PERMIT WAS REQUIRED. OBVIOUSLY WE WERE UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT WE DIDN'T REQUIRE ANY DOCUMENTATION AND THERE HAD BEEN A COM MIX- UP. THE FACT THAT THE CERTIFICATE WAS MISSING IN THE FIRST PLACE CAUGHT US BY SURPRISE. THE 2 OTHER CERTIFICATES NECESSARY (CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION AND RADIO LICENSE) WERE IN PLACE.
