Narrative:
ATIS at time of approach indicated ord landing runways 9R/4R (with ILS to each). Controller gave us vector to capture 'the localizer' then cleared us for the approach. We briefed and tuned runway 9R. Final controller queried us on our course. We were tracking runway 9R localizer. He told us he'd cleared us for runway 9L. He gave us a left turn to intercept about 13 DME. We did so and landed without further incident. (ATIS information) have ATIS accurately reflect which runways are currently landing. With abbreviated communications in ord area during high traffic it's important that if both runways 9's or any of the parallels are being used that ATIS state that so flcs are particularly on guard for this type of confusion. ATIS information said nothing about runway 9L, but said runway 9R was an ILS/arrival runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD-80 FLC PLANS FOR WRONG RWY APCH DUE TO ATIS INFO.
Narrative: ATIS AT TIME OF APCH INDICATED ORD LNDG RWYS 9R/4R (WITH ILS TO EACH). CTLR GAVE US VECTOR TO CAPTURE 'THE LOC' THEN CLRED US FOR THE APCH. WE BRIEFED AND TUNED RWY 9R. FINAL CTLR QUERIED US ON OUR COURSE. WE WERE TRACKING RWY 9R LOC. HE TOLD US HE'D CLRED US FOR RWY 9L. HE GAVE US A L TURN TO INTERCEPT ABOUT 13 DME. WE DID SO AND LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. (ATIS INFO) HAVE ATIS ACCURATELY REFLECT WHICH RWYS ARE CURRENTLY LNDG. WITH ABBREVIATED COMS IN ORD AREA DURING HIGH TFC IT'S IMPORTANT THAT IF BOTH RWYS 9'S OR ANY OF THE PARALLELS ARE BEING USED THAT ATIS STATE THAT SO FLCS ARE PARTICULARLY ON GUARD FOR THIS TYPE OF CONFUSION. ATIS INFO SAID NOTHING ABOUT RWY 9L, BUT SAID RWY 9R WAS AN ILS/ARR RWY.
