Narrative:
I was the captain of record scheduled for a far part 91 'ferry flight' on an md-11 from hnl, hi, to kuala lumpur, malaysia on jan/aa/95. Scheduled flying time was approximately 13 plus 38. Total block time on this leg segment was 14 plus 11. The crew consisted of myself, 1 other captain and 2 type rated first officer's. Prior to leaving the hotel I mentioned to the first officer that we must insure the destination airfield is open for our AA30Z arrival (BB30L). The additional captain showed early at the aircraft. He completed the preflight, determined the fuel load which we had previously discussed and completed all required paper work. Upon arrival at the airport I was briefed by the additional captain, completed my personal preflight duties, reviewed the WX and NOTAMS, and crosschecked the inertial reference units (IRU's) and FMS present position. I then checked the loaded computer flight plan waypoints displayed in the FMS and checked the distances. During my review of the WX and NOTAMS, I read a NOTAM regarding the field closure times in kuala lumpur's subang airport (wmkk). The NOTAM in question stated that the runway was closed from 1700-2130 hours on mondays and wednesdays. As I read the NOTAM I did a quick calculation and stated to my crew that our arrival day was thursday and therefore the closure NOTAM did not apply to tour flight. Approximately 9 or 10 hours into the flight and nearly 30 mins since our final report to hnl arinc, jakarta radio informed us that we would be proceeding to penang, malaysia (wmkp) which was our alternate since the destination airfield was closed during our arrival time. I reviewed the NOTAMS and then realized that the arrival day was, in fact, wednesday (UTC) and not thursday (local) as I had miscalculated the actual arrival day. I called hnl arinc and requested a phone patch to company dispatch. I was then redispatched to our alternate. The remainder of the flight was uneventful. During the remainder of the flight I studied the maps, j-aid, NOTAM information section to review the description of the NOTAM system. I could not find any explanation of how days of the week were calculated for NOTAM information. I should have realized that the NOTAM data was based on UTC day and not local day, however, I made a mistake and therefore, departed hnl believing the field was scheduled to be open for our arrival.

Title: ACFT DISPATCHED TO A CLOSED AIRFIELD.
Narrative: I WAS THE CAPT OF RECORD SCHEDULED FOR A FAR PART 91 'FERRY FLT' ON AN MD-11 FROM HNL, HI, TO KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA ON JAN/AA/95. SCHEDULED FLYING TIME WAS APPROX 13 PLUS 38. TOTAL BLOCK TIME ON THIS LEG SEGMENT WAS 14 PLUS 11. THE CREW CONSISTED OF MYSELF, 1 OTHER CAPT AND 2 TYPE RATED FO'S. PRIOR TO LEAVING THE HOTEL I MENTIONED TO THE FO THAT WE MUST INSURE THE DEST AIRFIELD IS OPEN FOR OUR AA30Z ARR (BB30L). THE ADDITIONAL CAPT SHOWED EARLY AT THE ACFT. HE COMPLETED THE PREFLT, DETERMINED THE FUEL LOAD WHICH WE HAD PREVIOUSLY DISCUSSED AND COMPLETED ALL REQUIRED PAPER WORK. UPON ARR AT THE ARPT I WAS BRIEFED BY THE ADDITIONAL CAPT, COMPLETED MY PERSONAL PREFLT DUTIES, REVIEWED THE WX AND NOTAMS, AND XCHKED THE INERTIAL REF UNITS (IRU'S) AND FMS PRESENT POS. I THEN CHKED THE LOADED COMPUTER FLT PLAN WAYPOINTS DISPLAYED IN THE FMS AND CHKED THE DISTANCES. DURING MY REVIEW OF THE WX AND NOTAMS, I READ A NOTAM REGARDING THE FIELD CLOSURE TIMES IN KUALA LUMPUR'S SUBANG ARPT (WMKK). THE NOTAM IN QUESTION STATED THAT THE RWY WAS CLOSED FROM 1700-2130 HRS ON MONDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS. AS I READ THE NOTAM I DID A QUICK CALCULATION AND STATED TO MY CREW THAT OUR ARR DAY WAS THURSDAY AND THEREFORE THE CLOSURE NOTAM DID NOT APPLY TO TOUR FLT. APPROX 9 OR 10 HRS INTO THE FLT AND NEARLY 30 MINS SINCE OUR FINAL RPT TO HNL ARINC, JAKARTA RADIO INFORMED US THAT WE WOULD BE PROCEEDING TO PENANG, MALAYSIA (WMKP) WHICH WAS OUR ALTERNATE SINCE THE DEST AIRFIELD WAS CLOSED DURING OUR ARR TIME. I REVIEWED THE NOTAMS AND THEN REALIZED THAT THE ARR DAY WAS, IN FACT, WEDNESDAY (UTC) AND NOT THURSDAY (LCL) AS I HAD MISCALCULATED THE ACTUAL ARR DAY. I CALLED HNL ARINC AND REQUESTED A PHONE PATCH TO COMPANY DISPATCH. I WAS THEN REDISPATCHED TO OUR ALTERNATE. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. DURING THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT I STUDIED THE MAPS, J-AID, NOTAM INFO SECTION TO REVIEW THE DESCRIPTION OF THE NOTAM SYS. I COULD NOT FIND ANY EXPLANATION OF HOW DAYS OF THE WK WERE CALCULATED FOR NOTAM INFO. I SHOULD HAVE REALIZED THAT THE NOTAM DATA WAS BASED ON UTC DAY AND NOT LCL DAY, HOWEVER, I MADE A MISTAKE AND THEREFORE, DEPARTED HNL BELIEVING THE FIELD WAS SCHEDULED TO BE OPEN FOR OUR ARR.
