Narrative:
During roll-out on runway 23, clt tower advised me to clear runway 23 at taxiway bravo and call ramp control. (Bravo crosses taxiway microphone about 200-300 ft, microphone is parallel to runway 23). I cleared the runway at bravo and stopped short of microphone and had to wait a short time to talk to ramp control, due to frequency congestion. (Sometimes we enter the ramp at bravo, sometimes at microphone). I observed another fk-100 touching down, so I turned up microphone to clear the bravo exit, and finally ramp control told us to come in. The tower asked me to call them, which I did, and they said that they had wanted me to go up bravo, to the ramp. The clearance wasn't clear to me, and I suggested a better way to state it would be, 'exit at bravo, cross microphone, and call ramp control.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR FLC FOLLOWED AN INCORRECT TAXI RTE DUE TO AN INABILITY TO QUERY THE RAMP CTLR ON A CONGESTED FREQ.
Narrative: DURING ROLL-OUT ON RWY 23, CLT TWR ADVISED ME TO CLR RWY 23 AT TXWY BRAVO AND CALL RAMP CTL. (BRAVO CROSSES TXWY MIKE ABOUT 200-300 FT, MIKE IS PARALLEL TO RWY 23). I CLRED THE RWY AT BRAVO AND STOPPED SHORT OF MIKE AND HAD TO WAIT A SHORT TIME TO TALK TO RAMP CTL, DUE TO FREQ CONGESTION. (SOMETIMES WE ENTER THE RAMP AT BRAVO, SOMETIMES AT MIKE). I OBSERVED ANOTHER FK-100 TOUCHING DOWN, SO I TURNED UP MIKE TO CLR THE BRAVO EXIT, AND FINALLY RAMP CTL TOLD US TO COME IN. THE TWR ASKED ME TO CALL THEM, WHICH I DID, AND THEY SAID THAT THEY HAD WANTED ME TO GO UP BRAVO, TO THE RAMP. THE CLRNC WASN'T CLR TO ME, AND I SUGGESTED A BETTER WAY TO STATE IT WOULD BE, 'EXIT AT BRAVO, CROSS MIKE, AND CALL RAMP CTL.'
