Narrative:
A flight was scheduled to maintain currency. Preflight went okay. Clearance was given and then ground control was contacted. I was instructed to taxi to runway 7L. I proceeded on taxiway west. A right turn was supposed to be made on taxiway north. As I taxied, I was looking for the turn onto north. I thought there would be a red lighted sign marking the runway. Anyway, I missed the hold short line and proceeded over the runway. I felt the bump when I first went onto the runway, but was unable to stop before it was too far. Instead of turning around in the middle, I put in full throttle to get across as fast as possible. I contacted ground immediately and they guided me back to where I was supposed to be. There was one airplane taking off, but was well clear by the time it was near my aircraft. The rest of the flight went without incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA PLT TAXIES ACROSS ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: A FLT WAS SCHEDULED TO MAINTAIN CURRENCY. PREFLT WENT OKAY. CLRNC WAS GIVEN AND THEN GND CTL WAS CONTACTED. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAXI TO RWY 7L. I PROCEEDED ON TXWY W. A R TURN WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MADE ON TXWY N. AS I TAXIED, I WAS LOOKING FOR THE TURN ONTO N. I THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE A RED LIGHTED SIGN MARKING THE RWY. ANYWAY, I MISSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND PROCEEDED OVER THE RWY. I FELT THE BUMP WHEN I FIRST WENT ONTO THE RWY, BUT WAS UNABLE TO STOP BEFORE IT WAS TOO FAR. INSTEAD OF TURNING AROUND IN THE MIDDLE, I PUT IN FULL THROTTLE TO GET ACROSS AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. I CONTACTED GND IMMEDIATELY AND THEY GUIDED ME BACK TO WHERE I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE. THERE WAS ONE AIRPLANE TAKING OFF, BUT WAS WELL CLR BY THE TIME IT WAS NEAR MY ACFT. THE REST OF THE FLT WENT WITHOUT INCIDENT.
