Narrative:

Missed position report at lears due to rerte lears not on flight plan. Captain distraction by repairing loose knob and first officer new to route. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter is flying as captain on the B-767- 300ER on international rtes. All of his trips to europe require 2 first officer's, 1 as relief. The relief first officer was in the cabin at the time of the incident. There are 2 reporting points about 40 mi apart approaching bda. The captain stepped out to the astro potty after the first reporting point. When he returned, he asked the first officer if he had reported the second one. The first officer stated that he thought that he had. The captain admits that 'I was not really watching the store as I should have been.' supplemental information from acn 295990: at derno, we contacted bda and were in radar contact. After about 60 NM, new york radio SELCAL'ed us asking our position. They wanted to know our time over lears, but unfortunately, the FMC dumped those points and we had no paper work for that portion of the flight. We told them whatever we estimated was when we were there. We had no hard copy to later verify crossing the fix. This was my leg to talk on the radios. With 2 people talking on the radio, some confusion may exist in who made the last position report. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: there were no conflicts or other aircraft in the area. The reporter has heard nothing from the FAA about this. The reporter believes that the captain was not too concerned about the incident.
