Narrative:
We left the gate and were instructed to taxi to runway 23. We had just landed on runway 23 about 40 min prior and knew that there was a parallel taxiway leading to the end. In trying to find the correct taxiway, we inadvertently taxied towards the active and did not realize until the last min that the parallel taxiway we were looking for was actually the edge of the ramp. Taxiway yellow markings were barely visible and the taxiway a sign is not easily seen from the ramp. We recognized our wrong turn and held short of the runway, but may have been on the hold short line. Tower then saw our position and told us to make a 180 degree turn and rejoin taxiway a. Unfamiliarity with the taxiway layout contributed to the confusion even though both pilots were looking at the airport diagram. Poor lighting in the cockpit and vague signage made finding the correct taxiway difficult. We should have stopped and asked for a progressive taxi the min we became disoriented. I will most certainly do this in the future.

Title: FLC FAMILIARITY WITH ARPT FLC ALMOST TAXIES ONTO THE ACTIVE RWY WHILE SEARCHING FOR THE CORRECT TXWY.
Narrative: WE LEFT THE GATE AND WERE INSTRUCTED TO TAXI TO RWY 23. WE HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 23 ABOUT 40 MIN PRIOR AND KNEW THAT THERE WAS A PARALLEL TXWY LEADING TO THE END. IN TRYING TO FIND THE CORRECT TXWY, WE INADVERTENTLY TAXIED TOWARDS THE ACTIVE AND DID NOT REALIZE UNTIL THE LAST MIN THAT THE PARALLEL TXWY WE WERE LOOKING FOR WAS ACTUALLY THE EDGE OF THE RAMP. TXWY YELLOW MARKINGS WERE BARELY VISIBLE AND THE TXWY A SIGN IS NOT EASILY SEEN FROM THE RAMP. WE RECOGNIZED OUR WRONG TURN AND HELD SHORT OF THE RWY, BUT MAY HAVE BEEN ON THE HOLD SHORT LINE. TWR THEN SAW OUR POS AND TOLD US TO MAKE A 180 DEG TURN AND REJOIN TXWY A. UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE TXWY LAYOUT CONTRIBUTED TO THE CONFUSION EVEN THOUGH BOTH PLTS WERE LOOKING AT THE ARPT DIAGRAM. POOR LIGHTING IN THE COCKPIT AND VAGUE SIGNAGE MADE FINDING THE CORRECT TXWY DIFFICULT. WE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED AND ASKED FOR A PROGRESSIVE TAXI THE MIN WE BECAME DISORIENTED. I WILL MOST CERTAINLY DO THIS IN THE FUTURE.
