Narrative:
As power was being advanced for takeoff, what sounded like 4-5 loud knocks to the cockpit door were heard. Not knowing if there was a serious problem in the cabin, the decision was made to discontinue the takeoff. Ground speed was less than 40 KTS. Upon talking to the lead flight attendant, he stated that the cockpit door started to open upon takeoff and he was merely trying to close it. The decision was made not to return to the gate as there were no maintenance or security reasons to do so. The cockpit door was checked secure and the following takeoff was accomplished without incident. Later, upon further discussion with the flight attendant, we relayed the information that we aborted because we felt there was a serious problem in the cabin. The flight attendant was apologetic and said he may have been just a bit overzealous in attempting to close the cockpit door.
