Narrative:
Xx flight departed sdq at AA00Z. The same aircraft and crew had previously arrived from ewr as flight dd. Ee's destination was ewr. A SELCAL check was satisfactorily performed for both flts. As so, I monitored 121.5 VHF on the secondary radio. As ee progressed, we experienced increasing difficulty in transmitting on HF to the extent that the captain and first officer were not able to make position reports via HF. We received 2 or 3 SELCAL pages and attempted to respond. Contact was made with an air carrier airlines flight ff on VHF and a relay was attempted but they could not raise arinc either. Radio communication was finally established with ZNY on VHF but by that time we missed some reporting points. We arrived in ewr and made appropriate logbook entries for the HF radio difficulties we had experienced. The apparent cause of our difficulty would seem to be poor atmospheric conditions or an equipment malfunction.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT FLYING OVER ATLANTIC OCEANIC RTES IS UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE ON HF FREQS. OTHER ACFT IN THE SAME AREA HAVE SAME DIFFICULTY.
Narrative: XX FLT DEPARTED SDQ AT AA00Z. THE SAME ACFT AND CREW HAD PREVIOUSLY ARRIVED FROM EWR AS FLT DD. EE'S DEST WAS EWR. A SELCAL CHK WAS SATISFACTORILY PERFORMED FOR BOTH FLTS. AS SO, I MONITORED 121.5 VHF ON THE SECONDARY RADIO. AS EE PROGRESSED, WE EXPERIENCED INCREASING DIFFICULTY IN XMITTING ON HF TO THE EXTENT THAT THE CAPT AND FO WERE NOT ABLE TO MAKE POS RPTS VIA HF. WE RECEIVED 2 OR 3 SELCAL PAGES AND ATTEMPTED TO RESPOND. CONTACT WAS MADE WITH AN ACR AIRLINES FLT FF ON VHF AND A RELAY WAS ATTEMPTED BUT THEY COULD NOT RAISE ARINC EITHER. RADIO COM WAS FINALLY ESTABLISHED WITH ZNY ON VHF BUT BY THAT TIME WE MISSED SOME RPTING POINTS. WE ARRIVED IN EWR AND MADE APPROPRIATE LOGBOOK ENTRIES FOR THE HF RADIO DIFFICULTIES WE HAD EXPERIENCED. THE APPARENT CAUSE OF OUR DIFFICULTY WOULD SEEM TO BE POOR ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS OR AN EQUIP MALFUNCTION.
