Narrative:
Had landing gear unsafe indication in final turn. Tower had spacing problem. Not enough time to trouble-shoot gear problem. Tower told us to fly down runway at 2000 ft MSL. We did. Right over airport we got 'traffic' TCASII. Yellow spot in middle of several white readouts on screen. Then we got 'monitor vertical speed' showing 0-1200 ft in red on ivsi. Just then an ATR (aircraft Y) went under us, nearly head-on, approximately 300 ft below. We never saw the 0-1200 ivsi (climb) aircraft. Beat on gear handle until 3 red lights went out. Landed uneventfully. Gear problem was due to dirt/crud in handle switch contacts. Cleaned. Ok next flight.
