Narrative:
We were given taxi clearance to runway 33R, we advised this was too short and requested another runway. The controller issued a clearance to taxi to runway 28 and hold short of runway 22 at kilo. To our horror, after crossing runway 33R on the way to hold short of runway 22 at kilo, ground advised us that they wanted us to hold short of runway 33R at kilo. During readback of hold short instructions, the first officer didn't read back the runway to hold short. He stated just 'hold short at kilo.' we were only about 100 ft from 33R at the time and moving slowly, this coupled with the very rapid fire communications from ground control led us to cross this runway (33R) when we were supposed to hold short. We (pilots) and ATC need to slow our communications down when lots of numbers are being used.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT CROSSED RWY AFTER BEING INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT, MISUNDERSTOOD COM.
Narrative: WE WERE GIVEN TAXI CLRNC TO RWY 33R, WE ADVISED THIS WAS TOO SHORT AND REQUESTED ANOTHER RWY. THE CTLR ISSUED A CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 28 AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22 AT KILO. TO OUR HORROR, AFTER XING RWY 33R ON THE WAY TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22 AT KILO, GND ADVISED US THAT THEY WANTED US TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 33R AT KILO. DURING READBACK OF HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTIONS, THE FO DIDN'T READ BACK THE RWY TO HOLD SHORT. HE STATED JUST 'HOLD SHORT AT KILO.' WE WERE ONLY ABOUT 100 FT FROM 33R AT THE TIME AND MOVING SLOWLY, THIS COUPLED WITH THE VERY RAPID FIRE COMS FROM GND CTL LED US TO CROSS THIS RWY (33R) WHEN WE WERE SUPPOSED TO HOLD SHORT. WE (PLTS) AND ATC NEED TO SLOW OUR COMS DOWN WHEN LOTS OF NUMBERS ARE BEING USED.
