Narrative:
Took delivery of new engine/propeller combination stc with unknown fuel burn. Departed coe VFR to pvu. Flew uneventful to south of byi. Had unreliable VOR needle and control microphone button failed. Went to hand-held microphone. Couldn't raise center, took heading estimate to place aircraft over V101. Saw great salt lake, determined approximately position and took heading toward pvu/slc. Got close enough in to use hand-held transmitter and called slc approach and asked for vectors to pvu. Accused of restr space violation, and then vectored through class B space to pvu. Asked to call slc approach. Did same and explained circumstances of diversion. After radios were acting up, believe correct action was followed by contacting closest facility and requesting radar vectors since new engine fuel burn was not known exactly. Could not safely divert around class B. Controllers honored request although at no time was the situation an emergency, just prudent to take the action I did.

Title: SMA ACCUSED OF PENETRATING RESTR AIRSPACE.
Narrative: TOOK DELIVERY OF NEW ENG/PROP COMBINATION STC WITH UNKNOWN FUEL BURN. DEPARTED COE VFR TO PVU. FLEW UNEVENTFUL TO S OF BYI. HAD UNRELIABLE VOR NEEDLE AND CTL MIKE BUTTON FAILED. WENT TO HAND-HELD MIKE. COULDN'T RAISE CTR, TOOK HDG ESTIMATE TO PLACE ACFT OVER V101. SAW GREAT SALT LAKE, DETERMINED APPROX POS AND TOOK HDG TOWARD PVU/SLC. GOT CLOSE ENOUGH IN TO USE HAND-HELD XMITTER AND CALLED SLC APCH AND ASKED FOR VECTORS TO PVU. ACCUSED OF RESTR SPACE VIOLATION, AND THEN VECTORED THROUGH CLASS B SPACE TO PVU. ASKED TO CALL SLC APCH. DID SAME AND EXPLAINED CIRCUMSTANCES OF DIVERSION. AFTER RADIOS WERE ACTING UP, BELIEVE CORRECT ACTION WAS FOLLOWED BY CONTACTING CLOSEST FACILITY AND REQUESTING RADAR VECTORS SINCE NEW ENG FUEL BURN WAS NOT KNOWN EXACTLY. COULD NOT SAFELY DIVERT AROUND CLASS B. CTLRS HONORED REQUEST ALTHOUGH AT NO TIME WAS THE SIT AN EMER, JUST PRUDENT TO TAKE THE ACTION I DID.
