Narrative:
It was my first time into airport. I had looked at airport diagram to see runway layout. Went with student to do touch and go's. Contacted tower and cleared to land on runway 35R. Airport was an old military airport with many runways and closed runways. My directional gyroscope was off (about 20 degrees) and the compass was also 10 degrees in error. I set up for an approach to a closed runway. On final I noticed there were no runway numbers. I thought maybe they were covered by tire skid marks, and also I looked around for another runway in case I didn't see it at first and didn't find it. Kept looking for runway markings. On flare-out, I saw faded yellow X's and told student to go around. We climbed out and were advised we had approached the wrong runway. I was also distracted by space shuttle and 747 parked on ramp.

Narrative: IT WAS MY FIRST TIME INTO ARPT. I HAD LOOKED AT ARPT DIAGRAM TO SEE RWY LAYOUT. WENT WITH STUDENT TO DO TOUCH AND GO'S. CONTACTED TWR AND CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 35R. ARPT WAS AN OLD MIL ARPT WITH MANY RWYS AND CLOSED RWYS. MY DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE WAS OFF (ABOUT 20 DEGS) AND THE COMPASS WAS ALSO 10 DEGS IN ERROR. I SET UP FOR AN APCH TO A CLOSED RWY. ON FINAL I NOTICED THERE WERE NO RWY NUMBERS. I THOUGHT MAYBE THEY WERE COVERED BY TIRE SKID MARKS, AND ALSO I LOOKED AROUND FOR ANOTHER RWY IN CASE I DIDN'T SEE IT AT FIRST AND DIDN'T FIND IT. KEPT LOOKING FOR RWY MARKINGS. ON FLARE-OUT, I SAW FADED YELLOW X'S AND TOLD STUDENT TO GAR. WE CLBED OUT AND WERE ADVISED WE HAD APCHED THE WRONG RWY. I WAS ALSO DISTRACTED BY SPACE SHUTTLE AND 747 PARKED ON RAMP.
