Narrative:

Upon departure from clt, I was requested to turn at low level just after takeoff to assigned heading. I was given the assigned heading by tower just prior to takeoff. Upon reaching about 200- 300 ft AGL, I turned to assigned heading without thinking. This took me over close to packed housing and shopping center beside the airport at what I consider a low altitude. I recommend that tower or ground issue heading after takeoff or during clearance (when initially given) so that pilots will not turn until they think that they can safely turn.
