Narrative:
In level flight, during the cruise phase of our flight, the left engine torque and egt began to fluctuate (torque 120 percent to '0' percent, egt 640 degrees celsius plus or minus 400 degrees celsius). We performed the checklist for fluctuations in our QRH. With the checklist complete, the engine indications returned to acceptable limits, (as per the QRH). As a precaution, I made the decision to divert the flight to binghampton, ny. The flight was originally scheduled from syracuse, ny to washington dulles. After being turned over to bgm tower, the engine fluctuation returned. We then asked 'tower' for a safe heading and altitude while we shut down the engine per the checklist in the QRH. After the engine was isolated, we then were vectored for an approach to landing on runway 16 (the emergency was previously declared with binghampton approach). The landing was made, uneventful, and we proceeded to the gate.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: L ENG FAILURE. FLC DECLARED AN EMER, DIVERTED AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY.
Narrative: IN LEVEL FLT, DURING THE CRUISE PHASE OF OUR FLT, THE L ENG TORQUE AND EGT BEGAN TO FLUCTUATE (TORQUE 120 PERCENT TO '0' PERCENT, EGT 640 DEGS CELSIUS PLUS OR MINUS 400 DEGS CELSIUS). WE PERFORMED THE CHKLIST FOR FLUCTUATIONS IN OUR QRH. WITH THE CHKLIST COMPLETE, THE ENG INDICATIONS RETURNED TO ACCEPTABLE LIMITS, (AS PER THE QRH). AS A PRECAUTION, I MADE THE DECISION TO DIVERT THE FLT TO BINGHAMPTON, NY. THE FLT WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FROM SYRACUSE, NY TO WASHINGTON DULLES. AFTER BEING TURNED OVER TO BGM TWR, THE ENG FLUCTUATION RETURNED. WE THEN ASKED 'TWR' FOR A SAFE HDG AND ALT WHILE WE SHUT DOWN THE ENG PER THE CHKLIST IN THE QRH. AFTER THE ENG WAS ISOLATED, WE THEN WERE VECTORED FOR AN APCH TO LNDG ON RWY 16 (THE EMER WAS PREVIOUSLY DECLARED WITH BINGHAMPTON APCH). THE LNDG WAS MADE, UNEVENTFUL, AND WE PROCEEDED TO THE GATE.
