Narrative:
Believed to be cleared into position on runway. C-172 cleared for takeoff, opposite direction. We entered the runway as C-172 climbed out overhead. Tower questioned us 'you were told to hold short.' first officer replied and apologized that he had read back 'into position.' I thought we were told to hold short but I'm not sure. Fortunately there was no conflict.
