Narrative:
We were being vectored on a right downwind to the visual approach for runway 10L and were told to follow an md-80. We reported the traffic in sight and were cleared for the visual behind the md-80 and told to contact tower at the marker. This was as we were turning base. Once we landed, we realized we never contacted tower. We then notified tower that we were down and clear runway 10L. He told us to 'contact ground and have a nice day.' at no time was any safety in jeopardy. I think 1 of the factors that caused us to not change to tower from approach wa the fact that it was VFR and we were following the md-80 and were told to contact the tower at a time in the future (ie, at the marker). When we contacted the tower once clear of the runway he didn't act as though anything unusual occurred. We figured what he did was clear us to land and we just didn't respond.
