Narrative:
As we descended through 7200 ft for 7000 ft ATC questioned us as to our altitude. We responded 'leveling at 7000 ft.' ATC replied that the clearance was only to 8000 ft, so we climbed to 8000 ft. Apparently the first officer set in the incorrect altitude in the selector and I did not catch the error. I guess we were not giving enough attention to what was going on around us. In the future, this should be completely avoidable by concentrating on each call to us from ATC. Supplemental information from acn 303959: cleared to cross ziggi at 8000 ft by ZNY. We were on the third straight 14 hour duty day, 7 hours plus flight time. Maybe it was inattn due to fatigue.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE FLC OF A TURBOPROP OVERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT IN DSCNT. PF CLAIMED TO BE MISLED BY PNF'S INCORRECTLY SET ALT SELECT. PNF CLAIMED FATIGUE. CTLR INTERVENED, AND FLC RETURNED TO CLRNC ALT.
Narrative: AS WE DSNDED THROUGH 7200 FT FOR 7000 FT ATC QUESTIONED US AS TO OUR ALT. WE RESPONDED 'LEVELING AT 7000 FT.' ATC REPLIED THAT THE CLRNC WAS ONLY TO 8000 FT, SO WE CLBED TO 8000 FT. APPARENTLY THE FO SET IN THE INCORRECT ALT IN THE SELECTOR AND I DID NOT CATCH THE ERROR. I GUESS WE WERE NOT GIVING ENOUGH ATTN TO WHAT WAS GOING ON AROUND US. IN THE FUTURE, THIS SHOULD BE COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE BY CONCENTRATING ON EACH CALL TO US FROM ATC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 303959: CLRED TO CROSS ZIGGI AT 8000 FT BY ZNY. WE WERE ON THE THIRD STRAIGHT 14 HR DUTY DAY, 7 HRS PLUS FLT TIME. MAYBE IT WAS INATTN DUE TO FATIGUE.
