Narrative:
While entering a left traffic pattern to runway 27 at grd from a midfield crosswind enter, encountered a beech bonanza flying the runway centerline at 1200 ft AGL. Near miss occurred as I crossed airport to begin left turn to left downwind. I had called 3 position points prior to entering the midfield position, but no reports were heard by us or anyone on the ground from the bonanza. Near miss was within 50 ft of a midair and resulted in failure to see and avoid by us and bonanza. I did not look closely enough at our altitude for traffic, but was concentrating on traffic scan in area of left traffic, (base, final, and downwind) for runway 27. I did not look closely enough for traffic on runway centerline and at 1200 ft AGL, especially after hearing no position reports. My assumptions on the traffic and airport approach were wrong and almost catastrophic, ie, expect the unexpected traffic!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC AT UNCTLED ARPT.
Narrative: WHILE ENTERING A L TFC PATTERN TO RWY 27 AT GRD FROM A MIDFIELD XWIND ENTER, ENCOUNTERED A BEECH BONANZA FLYING THE RWY CTRLINE AT 1200 FT AGL. NEAR MISS OCCURRED AS I CROSSED ARPT TO BEGIN L TURN TO L DOWNWIND. I HAD CALLED 3 POS POINTS PRIOR TO ENTERING THE MIDFIELD POS, BUT NO RPTS WERE HEARD BY US OR ANYONE ON THE GND FROM THE BONANZA. NEAR MISS WAS WITHIN 50 FT OF A MIDAIR AND RESULTED IN FAILURE TO SEE AND AVOID BY US AND BONANZA. I DID NOT LOOK CLOSELY ENOUGH AT OUR ALT FOR TFC, BUT WAS CONCENTRATING ON TFC SCAN IN AREA OF L TFC, (BASE, FINAL, AND DOWNWIND) FOR RWY 27. I DID NOT LOOK CLOSELY ENOUGH FOR TFC ON RWY CTRLINE AND AT 1200 FT AGL, ESPECIALLY AFTER HEARING NO POS RPTS. MY ASSUMPTIONS ON THE TFC AND ARPT APCH WERE WRONG AND ALMOST CATASTROPHIC, IE, EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED TFC!
