Narrative:
Cleared to 10000 ft by departure. At 10800 ft realized we had passed assigned altitude and took corrective action back to 10000 ft. At same time controller advised us of our altitude and traffic. During the next altitude change we discovered altitude alerter had failed, and did not give an aural warning.
