Narrative:
On approach to localizer back course runway 14 cmi controller asked if I could fly 12 DME arc to final approach course. Even though no arc depicted on government plate I said I would, radar was out. While on victor airway inbound 115 degree heading (final approach course 136 degrees), I arced at 12 DME but turned right, rather than left, to intercept, tried to use autoplt and obviously thought it not working. Fought autoplt for several mins and in the process ended up west of field at 2700 ft MSL, 300 ft below MSA. Told controller where I was (I had reported that I was having trouble earlier and he asked me if I could recapture localizer, I said I was working on it) and that I would like VOR runway 4 approach. Executed approach and landed. I had originally briefed 20-25 mi out for VOR 4 and should have stuck with it, rather than trying to hurry up and make up an arc. Also, should have drawn the arc on the chart.

Narrative: ON APCH TO LOC BACK COURSE RWY 14 CMI CTLR ASKED IF I COULD FLY 12 DME ARC TO FINAL APCH COURSE. EVEN THOUGH NO ARC DEPICTED ON GOV PLATE I SAID I WOULD, RADAR WAS OUT. WHILE ON VICTOR AIRWAY INBOUND 115 DEG HDG (FINAL APCH COURSE 136 DEGS), I ARCED AT 12 DME BUT TURNED R, RATHER THAN L, TO INTERCEPT, TRIED TO USE AUTOPLT AND OBVIOUSLY THOUGHT IT NOT WORKING. FOUGHT AUTOPLT FOR SEVERAL MINS AND IN THE PROCESS ENDED UP W OF FIELD AT 2700 FT MSL, 300 FT BELOW MSA. TOLD CTLR WHERE I WAS (I HAD RPTED THAT I WAS HAVING TROUBLE EARLIER AND HE ASKED ME IF I COULD RECAPTURE LOC, I SAID I WAS WORKING ON IT) AND THAT I WOULD LIKE VOR RWY 4 APCH. EXECUTED APCH AND LANDED. I HAD ORIGINALLY BRIEFED 20-25 MI OUT FOR VOR 4 AND SHOULD HAVE STUCK WITH IT, RATHER THAN TRYING TO HURRY UP AND MAKE UP AN ARC. ALSO, SHOULD HAVE DRAWN THE ARC ON THE CHART.
