Narrative:
Both got involved in climb interception of airway and radio calls. Captain (PNF), I believe, was talking to operations. We were both trying to confirm the airway interception and I went through the assigned altitude. As soon as we realized this fact, I immediately descended. When questioned by ATC controller, we reported 500 ft high and correcting. Nothing more was said. Altitude alerters are present in some aircraft and all are placarded inoperative. The only altitude reminder is that the pilots put the altitude in the stand-by ADF radio frequency readout. After realizing our mistake, we corrected immediately. I thought one report would cover both of us, but I'm not sure. The captain also sent his report in. I wish there was some way to find out more about the ASRS so I could have clarified time allowable and where to get forms. This does not make up for our irresponsibility, but I would like to know more about protection for a career that I've invested so much time and money into.
