Narrative:
I read back a clearance to be at 11000 ft, 40 mi northwest of clt at 250 KTS. Put 11000 ft in box and 40 mi reminder on wheel. At approximately 11400 ft, ZTL told us the clearance was to be at 12000 ft. Told him I had read back 11000 ft but did not get a response from center to confirm. ATC said there was no problem or conflict and we were then cleared to clt approach. In the mean time we climbed back to 12000 ft. I should have made ATC confirm what I read back, but it was busy at that time. Supplemental information from acn 306477: inbound to clt on the shine 5 arrival captain read back very clearly 'cross shine at 11000 ft and 250 KTS.' ATC did not reply so we crossed shine at 11000 ft and 250 KTS. Atlanta said we were to cross shine at 12000 ft and 250 KTS. ATC should listen to our reply before jumping off the frequency. This would help the flight crew's, a great deal, from reading back wrong, or what we thought was the right altitude.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC MISHEARD CLRNC, AND FAILED TO GET ATC ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. XING RESTR OVERSHOT.
Narrative: I READ BACK A CLRNC TO BE AT 11000 FT, 40 MI NW OF CLT AT 250 KTS. PUT 11000 FT IN BOX AND 40 MI REMINDER ON WHEEL. AT APPROX 11400 FT, ZTL TOLD US THE CLRNC WAS TO BE AT 12000 FT. TOLD HIM I HAD READ BACK 11000 FT BUT DID NOT GET A RESPONSE FROM CTR TO CONFIRM. ATC SAID THERE WAS NO PROB OR CONFLICT AND WE WERE THEN CLRED TO CLT APCH. IN THE MEAN TIME WE CLBED BACK TO 12000 FT. I SHOULD HAVE MADE ATC CONFIRM WHAT I READ BACK, BUT IT WAS BUSY AT THAT TIME. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 306477: INBOUND TO CLT ON THE SHINE 5 ARR CAPT READ BACK VERY CLRLY 'CROSS SHINE AT 11000 FT AND 250 KTS.' ATC DID NOT REPLY SO WE CROSSED SHINE AT 11000 FT AND 250 KTS. ATLANTA SAID WE WERE TO CROSS SHINE AT 12000 FT AND 250 KTS. ATC SHOULD LISTEN TO OUR REPLY BEFORE JUMPING OFF THE FREQ. THIS WOULD HELP THE FLC'S, A GREAT DEAL, FROM READING BACK WRONG, OR WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS THE RIGHT ALT.
