Narrative:
Departure from greensboro airport (gso) talking to departure control we were given a heading shortly after takeoff. That heading would have put the aircraft in the middle of a thunderstorm that the crew was painting on radar and watching visually. My response to the controller was that we need to maintain runway heading. She okayed that request and gave us a clearance to climb to 11000 ft MSL. I read back 11000 ft and we proceeded to climb to 11000 ft. At approximately 10800 ft we were told my departure control that the altitude was 10000 ft. We descended to 10000 ft. We were not told whether or not this constituted a near miss or a conflict. Another possible contributing factor, there was an aircraft with the call sign gbd (my call sign hbd). Gbd on 2 occasions answered a call meant for my flight hbd.

Title: MLG INVOLVED IN FLT WITH SIMILAR A/C RESULTING IN CLRNC CONFUSION. ALTDEV.
Narrative: DEP FROM GREENSBORO ARPT (GSO) TALKING TO DEP CTL WE WERE GIVEN A HDG SHORTLY AFTER TKOF. THAT HDG WOULD HAVE PUT THE ACFT IN THE MIDDLE OF A TSTM THAT THE CREW WAS PAINTING ON RADAR AND WATCHING VISUALLY. MY RESPONSE TO THE CTLR WAS THAT WE NEED TO MAINTAIN RWY HDG. SHE OKAYED THAT REQUEST AND GAVE US A CLRNC TO CLB TO 11000 FT MSL. I READ BACK 11000 FT AND WE PROCEEDED TO CLB TO 11000 FT. AT APPROX 10800 FT WE WERE TOLD MY DEP CTL THAT THE ALT WAS 10000 FT. WE DSNDED TO 10000 FT. WE WERE NOT TOLD WHETHER OR NOT THIS CONSTITUTED A NEAR MISS OR A CONFLICT. ANOTHER POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTING FACTOR, THERE WAS AN ACFT WITH THE CALL SIGN GBD (MY CALL SIGN HBD). GBD ON 2 OCCASIONS ANSWERED A CALL MEANT FOR MY FLT HBD.
