Narrative:

Aircraft dispatched with 1 generator on MEL, leaving 1 engine generator and an APU generator. MEL specifies that the APU generator must be used. During climb out, the APU generator faulted and would not re-set, leaving the electrical supplied by 1 generator with battery backup. I judged this to be an emergency situation due to possible failure of the remaining generator, leaving questionable battery power to remain in radio contact with the ground. We declared an emergency and returned to charlotte, nc, and landed without incident. The APU generator was written up.

Title: PRIMARY ELECTRICAL SUPPLY PROB MANDATES THAT A FK-100 RETURN LAND.

Narrative: ACFT DISPATCHED WITH 1 GENERATOR ON MEL, LEAVING 1 ENG GENERATOR AND AN APU GENERATOR. MEL SPECIFIES THAT THE APU GENERATOR MUST BE USED. DURING CLBOUT, THE APU GENERATOR FAULTED AND WOULD NOT RE-SET, LEAVING THE ELECTRICAL SUPPLIED BY 1 GENERATOR WITH BATTERY BACKUP. I JUDGED THIS TO BE AN EMER SIT DUE TO POSSIBLE FAILURE OF THE REMAINING GENERATOR, LEAVING QUESTIONABLE BATTERY PWR TO REMAIN IN RADIO CONTACT WITH THE GND. WE DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED TO CHARLOTTE, NC, AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE APU GENERATOR WAS WRITTEN UP.
