Narrative:
Level at FL230. ATC asked us to increase airspeed, using autothrottles, increased speed bug. #1 engine egt increased above red line, went to 1250 degrees C. Retarded #1 throttle, ran appropriate checklist. It called for engine shutdown. Secured engine, declared emergency, returned to dfw with equipment standing by. Landing normal, no problems.

Narrative: LEVEL AT FL230. ATC ASKED US TO INCREASE AIRSPD, USING AUTOTHROTTLES, INCREASED SPD BUG. #1 ENG EGT INCREASED ABOVE RED LINE, WENT TO 1250 DEGS C.
