Narrative:

Altitude deviation. On climb out on worth 5 out of dfw to psp and level at FL170 given FL280. We entered FL280, read back FL280 and even visually read FL280 off of altitude window back to controller. While climbing in VMC, I decided to talk to passenger with first officer flying, about the time I finished, controller ask us to check altitude but also cleared us to FL310. We were climbing out of FL285 to FL290 and altitude window showed FL290.
