Narrative:
Taxied into position and hold for an intersection takeoff from runway 29 at romeo in newark, nj. On the runway is a line painted about halfway between romeo and papa intxns. There are no signs either side of the runway stating what this line is marked for. This line was painted on the runway a few yrs ago. As a pilot who works for airlines, I fly out of newark every day. We, the pilots have always thought that the line was the maximum point that we could use for the runway 29 romeo intersection takeoff. But as I found out on june/xx/95 the ATC controller that saw me back taxi into position at romeo up to that line stated that I was in violation of using more runway than cleared for. I stated that I always thought I had clearance up to that line for the intersection takeoff since there are no signs on the runway, or any information on the airport chart. The controller then stated the purpose of the line is a hold short for landing aircraft on runway 22R. If so, I would hope someone let the pilots that fly into newark know with signs or information our airport charts.

Title: CAPT OF AN MDT BACK TAXIED DURING A RWY INTXN TKOF CAUSING THE TWR CTLR TO ADMONISH HIM FOR DOING SO.
Narrative: TAXIED INTO POS AND HOLD FOR AN INTXN TKOF FROM RWY 29 AT ROMEO IN NEWARK, NJ. ON THE RWY IS A LINE PAINTED ABOUT HALFWAY BTWN ROMEO AND PAPA INTXNS. THERE ARE NO SIGNS EITHER SIDE OF THE RWY STATING WHAT THIS LINE IS MARKED FOR. THIS LINE WAS PAINTED ON THE RWY A FEW YRS AGO. AS A PLT WHO WORKS FOR AIRLINES, I FLY OUT OF NEWARK EVERY DAY. WE, THE PLTS HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THE LINE WAS THE MAX POINT THAT WE COULD USE FOR THE RWY 29 ROMEO INTXN TKOF. BUT AS I FOUND OUT ON JUNE/XX/95 THE ATC CTLR THAT SAW ME BACK TAXI INTO POS AT ROMEO UP TO THAT LINE STATED THAT I WAS IN VIOLATION OF USING MORE RWY THAN CLRED FOR. I STATED THAT I ALWAYS THOUGHT I HAD CLRNC UP TO THAT LINE FOR THE INTXN TKOF SINCE THERE ARE NO SIGNS ON THE RWY, OR ANY INFO ON THE ARPT CHART. THE CTLR THEN STATED THE PURPOSE OF THE LINE IS A HOLD SHORT FOR LNDG ACFT ON RWY 22R. IF SO, I WOULD HOPE SOMEONE LET THE PLTS THAT FLY INTO NEWARK KNOW WITH SIGNS OR INFO OUR ARPT CHARTS.
