Narrative:

Corp jet flight from sfo to smo. Fernando 5 arrival at smo with avenal transition. I was letting the FMS and autoplt fly the arrival. Cleared to smo. Fernando 5 says to expect VOR-a approach at darts. Darts is also the first fix on the VOR-a approach. The turn from darts to the final approach course is more than 90 degrees (117 degrees to be exact). Socal approach had not issued an approach clearance. As usual the radios were very busy. The FMS started the turn from darts to final approach approximately 2 mi prior to darts. The FMS is designed to do this so that the aircraft will not overshoot the new course. The controller called about 1/2 way through the turn and asked what we were doing. We responded that we were proceeding to the smo airport. The controller asked that we call by phone when on the ground. I complied and was told by a very courteous person at socal approach that we had intruded into another controller's airspace by starting the turn early and advised that we not let the FMS fly the airplane in los angeles basin. I intend to be very careful of this in the future but believe the aim directs pilots to start turns early in these sits to avoid overshooting the new course. (Aim en route procedures paragraph 5-34.)
