Narrative:
Climbing in MVFR conditions, under IFR flight plan, from jeffco airport (bjc) to centennial airport (apa). On ground, clearance had indicated an initial altitude of 8000 ft MSL. When climbing, I switched to denver approach frequency and the controller did indicate a heading of 350 degrees and 7000 ft. In the climb, turn and power changes, I glanced down at my knee pad, I had written 8000 ft for the initial cruise and continued climb past 7000-7500 ft. It's simple, I busted the 7000 ft assigned altitude. The controller asked me what my altitude was and what was assigned. I told him 7500 ft and climbing to 8000 ft. He quickly restated the 7000 ft assigned and I expedited my descent to 7000 ft MSL. In thinking about the bust, I should have asked the controller before climbing above 7000 ft because I had doubts whether he had cleared me to 8000 ft MSL.

THE CTLR ASKED ME WHAT MY ALT WAS AND WHAT WAS ASSIGNED. I TOLD HIM 7500 FT AND CLBING TO 8000 FT. HE QUICKLY RESTATED THE 7000 FT ASSIGNED AND I EXPEDITED MY DSCNT TO 7000 FT MSL. IN THINKING ABOUT THE BUST, I SHOULD HAVE ASKED THE CTLR BEFORE CLBING ABOVE 7000 FT BECAUSE I HAD DOUBTS WHETHER HE HAD CLRED ME TO 8000 FT MSL.
