Narrative:

Captain decided to fly first officer's leg out of london stating he needed the practice. He then tried to navigation the 180 degree turn after takeoff using DME instead of the HSI glass cockpit and FMC which was giving him correct commands. He did not start his turn when commanded by the flight director and needed extensive help from the first officer and the 3RD pilot. Captain appeared to violate lhr airspace and then got confused on vertical navigation and would not take over manually. Captain flew a very erratic path up through 6000 ft until the other pilots could get him settled down. The captain was low time reserve pilot with very poor knowledge of operations procedure.
