Narrative:

While climbing to an assigned altitude of 12000 ft, I, the captain, was completing company paper work and did not notice the altitude capture of the autoplt was inadvertently disengaged. We were climbing at a rate of 2000 FPM. By the time the altitude alerter sounded at 12400 ft we had exceeded the assigned altitude by 1000 ft. ATC responded by allowing a continued climb to 15000 ft. There was no conflicting traffic in the area.
