Narrative:
Ric has air carrier ramp adjacent to GA ramp. In past GA pilots have been advised by ground to use taxiway B to GA executive terminal after crossing runway 2/20 on taxiway C. In this reported event, I crossed runway 2/20, stopped, called ground to taxi to GA executive terminal, and received 'taxi to ramp.' I asked if taxiway C was approved and received, 'affirmative.' on departure from GA executive terminal, noticed sign in pavement of ramp indicating air carrier area and no GA taxi. I assumed the restr didn't apply because of ground response on arrival. Believe restrs of this type should be made clear in ATIS instead of endlessly repeating requirement to hold short of runways, etc. Not clear at ric if taxi restr applied or not. Air carrier ramp appeared unused by air carrier aircraft. I should have stopped when I saw the sign and asked ground. I didn't plan the taxi, I took the taxi for granted. It won't happen again.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DEV FROM CLRNC RTE. TXWY MARKING SIGNAGE. PLT TAXIES ON A RESTR RAMP AND LATER REALIZES HIS ERROR.
Narrative: RIC HAS ACR RAMP ADJACENT TO GA RAMP. IN PAST GA PLTS HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY GND TO USE TXWY B TO GA EXECUTIVE TERMINAL AFTER XING RWY 2/20 ON TXWY C. IN THIS RPTED EVENT, I CROSSED RWY 2/20, STOPPED, CALLED GND TO TAXI TO GA EXECUTIVE TERMINAL, AND RECEIVED 'TAXI TO RAMP.' I ASKED IF TXWY C WAS APPROVED AND RECEIVED, 'AFFIRMATIVE.' ON DEP FROM GA EXECUTIVE TERMINAL, NOTICED SIGN IN PAVEMENT OF RAMP INDICATING ACR AREA AND NO GA TAXI. I ASSUMED THE RESTR DIDN'T APPLY BECAUSE OF GND RESPONSE ON ARR. BELIEVE RESTRS OF THIS TYPE SHOULD BE MADE CLR IN ATIS INSTEAD OF ENDLESSLY REPEATING REQUIREMENT TO HOLD SHORT OF RWYS, ETC. NOT CLR AT RIC IF TAXI RESTR APPLIED OR NOT. ACR RAMP APPEARED UNUSED BY ACR ACFT. I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED WHEN I SAW THE SIGN AND ASKED GND. I DIDN'T PLAN THE TAXI, I TOOK THE TAXI FOR GRANTED. IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN.
