Narrative:

During our approach to runway 8L in atl during a period of minimum traffic, we were requested to reduce airspeed and increase the rate of descent for a short approach (less than 10 mi) to runway 8L. Clearance to lower approach altitudes were received, set, and initiated in rapid succession. We had 5000 ft set in the mode control panel altitude window and had passed through 7000 ft en route to 5000 ft. Approach control asked us to maintain 7000 ft. A climb was initiated back to 7000 ft. Just as we reached 7000 ft. We were cleared back to 5000 ft. The controller did not say what altitude we had actually been cleared to during the 7000 ft to 5000 ft (altitude set) descent. We never saw any other aircraft or traffic resolution.
