Narrative:
While receiving VFR advisories from ny approach, pilot inadvertently climbed above his assigned altitude. Problem resulted from misunderstanding as to proper final altitude. Pilot was assigned a non-standard VFR altitude (3500 ft MSL) while headed in a west direction and should have questioned assignment instead of continuing up to proper VFR altitude for direction of flight (ie, 4500 ft MSL).
