Narrative:

Flight departed ord en route to lan. A normal flaps 15 degrees takeoff was executed off of runway 22L at ord, and given a 090 degree heading and climb to 5000 ft. The climb out was normal and the flight was cleared to climb to 9000 ft. While passing 7700 ft and 45 mi northeast of ord the engine fire warning sounded with the appropriate indications on ccas, fire handle, and condition lever being displayed for the #1 engine. Crew completed all memory item checklists along with single engine operating procedures checklist. The engine fire required 1 fire extinguishing bottle to be discharged to be doused. Flight leveled at 8000 ft and notified ATC of the situation and declared an emergency. Flight was cleared direct to ord at 8000 ft and requested crash fire rescue equipment crew to be standing by. ATC was informed as to the number of souls on board (18) and fuel remaining. The cabin crew was notified of the situation and asked to inspect the engine from the interior of the cabin and reported 'nothing.' the company was notified the flight would be returning to ord. The remainder of the flight was uneventful. Aircraft was landed on runway 27L at ord and cleared on the 'microphone' taxiway and stopped. Crash fire rescue equipment inspected the #1 engine area and reported the fire out and secured. A post flight of the #1 engine area was performed by the cockpit crew and a non-revenue maintenance supervisor. The passenger were deplaned through the main cabin door using normal procedures. The cockpit crew completed all necessary post flight paperwork and turned the aircraft over to maintenance. The cockpit crew was then escorted to the chief pilot's office for debriefing.

CFR INSPECTED THE #1 ENG AREA AND RPTED THE FIRE OUT AND SECURED. A POST FLT OF THE #1 ENG AREA WAS PERFORMED BY THE COCKPIT CREW AND A NON-REVENUE MAINT SUPVR. THE PAX WERE DEPLANED THROUGH THE MAIN CABIN DOOR USING NORMAL PROCS. THE COCKPIT CREW COMPLETED ALL NECESSARY POST FLT PAPERWORK AND TURNED THE ACFT OVER TO MAINT. THE COCKPIT CREW WAS THEN ESCORTED TO THE CHIEF PLT'S OFFICE FOR DEBRIEFING.
