Narrative:
Tower called for air carrier xax to 'position and hold runway 23L.' we answered 'position and hold air carrier xax' and took the runway. We were flight xaa. The confusion was straightened out prior to takeoff. Contributing factors: we had just brought flight yax in from san, with a quick turn in ind. Early morning, tired crew. Supplemental information from acn 316056: our flight (aircraft #1) was #1 for takeoff. Aircraft #2 was second in line for takeoff. Both aircraft were from the same company. The tower, using the flight number for aircraft #2, instructed position and hold. The flight number of aircraft #2 is one of 4 flight numbers I have used exclusively for the last 12 months. Aircraft #1 and #2 are scheduled to depart at exactly the same time. Contributing factors were the force of habit using the flight number and fatigue from flying all night. We had been on duty 7 hours and had flown 4 hours. I had been awake for 18 hours except for a 1 hour nap taken in the middle of the day before duty time began. I need to change habit patterns and be more alert at critical times.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A SCHEDULED FREIGHT OP FLC ACCEPTED A 'POS AND HOLD' CLRNC FOR OTHER COMPANY ACFT.
Narrative: TWR CALLED FOR ACR XAX TO 'POS AND HOLD RWY 23L.' WE ANSWERED 'POS AND HOLD ACR XAX' AND TOOK THE RWY. WE WERE FLT XAA. THE CONFUSION WAS STRAIGHTENED OUT PRIOR TO TKOF. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: WE HAD JUST BROUGHT FLT YAX IN FROM SAN, WITH A QUICK TURN IN IND. EARLY MORNING, TIRED CREW. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 316056: OUR FLT (ACFT #1) WAS #1 FOR TKOF. ACFT #2 WAS SECOND IN LINE FOR TKOF. BOTH ACFT WERE FROM THE SAME COMPANY. THE TWR, USING THE FLT NUMBER FOR ACFT #2, INSTRUCTED POS AND HOLD. THE FLT NUMBER OF ACFT #2 IS ONE OF 4 FLT NUMBERS I HAVE USED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE LAST 12 MONTHS. ACFT #1 AND #2 ARE SCHEDULED TO DEPART AT EXACTLY THE SAME TIME. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE THE FORCE OF HABIT USING THE FLT NUMBER AND FATIGUE FROM FLYING ALL NIGHT. WE HAD BEEN ON DUTY 7 HRS AND HAD FLOWN 4 HRS. I HAD BEEN AWAKE FOR 18 HRS EXCEPT FOR A 1 HR NAP TAKEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY BEFORE DUTY TIME BEGAN. I NEED TO CHANGE HABIT PATTERNS AND BE MORE ALERT AT CRITICAL TIMES.
