Narrative:

On descent sadde arrival to lax. Approach gave clearance to cross smo VOR at or above 7000 ft to maintain 2500 ft. First officer read back 2000 ft and selected that in the window. I also read back 2000 ft, I think as influenced by the first officer readback. On base, lax approach said he needed us at 2500 ft (we had descended to 2000 ft). It was then that I recalled being cleared to 2500 ft not 2000 ft. We climbed to 2500 ft and continued the ILS to runway 24R. No conflict involved.
